Q: Mickey is starting to get a white face. Just how old is she?
A: Her previous owners said she was about 4 1/2. Our vet concurs with
that.
Q: What's her story? Why was she turned in to rescue?
A: Her previous owners knew she was in dire need of expensive medical
care and just couldn't afford it.
Q: If she's going to cost rescue so much money wouldn't rescue be
better served by doing the humane thing and having her put down? Think of how
many dogs could be helped with that money.
A: Good question and one that the board of GRINinc has to deal with
all the time. It's hard to make these decisions and the board weighs all the
factors. Mickey is a fairly young dog, she has a great temperament, we were able
to negotiate some good prices from the vets that work with us, and yes...there
but for the grace of God, this could be one of our own dogs. Mickey is a good
"save". To watch her recovery has been nothing short of miraculous.
Q: You said she would be on pain medication for the rest of her life,
does that mean she'll have a shortened life span?
A: No, not necessarily. She may...and probably will live a normal
lifespan. Maybe longer, who really knows? It does mean she will need trips to
the vet twice a year to check her liver functions and adjust or change her meds.
Q: Wow, is she going to be expensive to "maintain"?
A: Probably less than your cable or satellite bill and she'll be a
whole lot more entertaining and satisfying :) (not to mention, way more
worthwhile, you just can't buy that kind of love).
Q: Okay, I'm interested. I see pictures of her with other dogs, but
how does she really react to them?
A: Mickey is fine with dogs. She's not really a dog that will "play"
so we assume she'd be better off with no puppies or dogs that would want to jump
on her.
Q: How about cats?
A: No, nope, nada, never! Mickey is way too obsessed with cats to ever
live with one. She doesn't seem to have the same obsession with squirrels,
lizards, etc... Go figure. Cats are definitely out for her.
Q: Is Mickey house broken? Will she potty in the house or chew
inappropriate things?
A: Yes, she is house broken, even crate trained. Will she steal food
off the counter if it's left out for her? She will now because it doesn't hurt
to jump. Will she chew your shoes, couch or remote control...NO.
Q: Does Mickey walk well on a lead?
A: She does. She knows sit, off and a few other commands. Would we
recommend she be taken to an obedience class? Of course. If you've never taken
an "older" dog through a class you are in for a pleasant surprise.
