Hummm, what does that name make me think of? Well, there's the Hudson House out in California. Who could ever forget Rock... and that Kate is just too cute!!! Then there's the river of course and those great old automobiles. I can't forget J.T. Hudson, he was my Grandpa and one of the smartest men who ever lived :)

It's not really any of those things or people though, it's Hudson the dog and how he almost died because taxpayers have let their Animal Services go to hell. Let me explain. Hudson was found as a stray and taken to Animal Services. This is in one of the larger counties on the West Coast. This facility has 10 runs in their "Adoption Center". TEN!!! That's it folks. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what happens to most of the dogs that end up there.

Here is the story of Hudson, the wannabe Golden Retriever
I got a call from one of the administrators at Animal Services telling me they had a Golden Retriever and his time was up.Did we want him? "Is he a pure bred Golden?" I asked. "Oh yes", she was quite emphatic. "Are you sure? We're really over extended now and are only taking pure breeds in the program".She reassured me again that the dog was in fact pure bred so I asked when she was going to have to put him down if we didn't take him. "Today" she said. Crap!!! I can't possibly get down there and ID him today so I asked her to run him through their "program" so we could get him neutered and all his shots up to date. This buys me another day I'm thinking, (he,he) and I'm saving rescue some money. Imagine my surprise when I went to pick him up from the Vet's office the next day and this dog walks out with BLACK on the tip of his tail! cont'....

Well he's sure close to being all Golden but the black on the tail and the rather small ears meant he had to be a mix. Now I'm thinking...okay... I've taken in mixes before and we've never had a problem finding them the very best homes. That's about the time the vet tech told me that he was dog aggressive and if I had other dogs at home to be extremely careful. My heart sank to my knees. I mean I only had six more dogs back at the house <sigh>. cont'...

As you can see from the photo, that was total bunk! That's Hudson coming towards you and all six of the other dogs were in the house at the time! He's fine with other dogs...but...he does like to PLAY,PLAY,PLAY all the time. Heck...he's even good with ...cont'...

CATS!!!
Not a problem. Hudson is young though and I'm sure he would chase a cat if it ran. I highly doubt he would eat one though :) He's been nose to nose with mine and was just fine. cont'...

My best guess is that Hudson is about a year old. Maybe less. He's a puppy. He has moderate coat and some nice feathering. As you can see from the photo, he's definitely got a lot of Golden in him. I can tell you this, he's darned sure got that Golden temperament. He's a real sweetheart and loves people. He only weighed 58 lbs when we weighed him today at PetsMart. We'll work on that. He's a handsome lad to boot! I can't tell you all the people that complimented me on my good looking Golden today at PetsMart :) cont'...

Look at that face! Was he a good save? You bet! Was he incredibly lucky? More than he will ever know. If I had gone down and ID'ed him that day, I would have said no and he'd now be dead along with the thousands of others. It breaks my heart to think that could have happened, and it's the part of rescue I hate the worst. We as taxpayers should demand that our counties have adequate facilities for animals. We as Golden lovers should help GRRMF realize our dream of having our own facility. If you would like to contribute, click HERE.

Oh yeah, before I forget. Anybody out there with a fence who would like to
give a really great dog a second chance? He's mighty deserving.
