| This is Cody about five years ago. You want him...right? I mean, after all, this dog is drop dead gorgeous. If you like the English cream coat, this guy is for you. Unfortunately Cody no longer looks like this. He is a prime example of why you should NOT overfeed your Golden. You wouldn't feed your best friend poison, would you? Too much food can and WILL cause your dog to have health problems. |

This is Cody now and here is his story. We got a call the
last week of March from a lady who was desperate to find a home
for her Golden. Her husband had died three weeks prior and her
son was coming down to sell her things and move her into an apartment
the coming weekend. Cody Bear was seven years old and "a
little overweight". His shots were due and he was stressed
because he was her husbands dog, but he was a really nice boy. Gail and I agreed to pick the dog up on the 31st of March and foster him. What we found was the most OBESE Golden we have ever seen. This guy was HUGE! To his credit, he did manage to make it into the van with a little shove. We knew we were in for the long haul with this one. Who would ever want this fat, old dog? We took Cody to our vet on the following Monday. As I put him on the scale the Vet and all the techs waited with anticipation to see the final result. Yikes! 149.8 lbs. The vet said he would bet big bucks on a thyroid problem, so we ran panels. Guess what? They were normal. Mr. Cody is just plain fat.He was heartworm free and we put him on preventative. He had all his shots, was micro-chipped and we even managed to clip those nails of his. Other than being grossly overweight the vet said he was pretty healthy...considering. He couldn't run any marathons, that was for sure. |

| Remember. Cody is still that young dog in the first picture you looked at. He will be a gorgeous dog again with the proper diet. Fortunately, he loves green beans and is on his way. This is what I know after two weeks of living with him. He gets along with other dogs and CATS are no problem. I have one and he was living with four.I don't think he has had much socialization (we are working on that). He is wary of new people,(not any more, see his update page!) but warms up really quick.Once he knows you he is VERY sweet and velcro like.He does know basic commands (sit, down, stay). He doesn't have to be crated. He has run of our house and is fine.He likes to play and is quite comical when you see all 150 lbs. of him bouncing around.Cody walks VERY nice on a lead (which is good, since he needs to walk twice a day). He will be what I consider a special needs dog. He has to be kept on a diet and the weight won't fall off overnight. It will be worth it though. I consider him a "good save". If his former owner had been forced to turn him into Animal Control I can guarantee you that he would have been put down for being "unadoptable" because of his weight and age. What a load of crap! How would you like to be put down because you were middle aged and fat? Please support GRRMF and help save more of these fine animals who have fallen upon hard times through no fault of their own! |
