Yup! Bernie finally got his new home. Well worth the wait mind you. His entire "wish list" has been fulfilled (see bottom of page). Is Bernie happy? You bet! Do I miss him? Incredibly. I never thought that giving up one of my fosters would affect me so. While it broke my heart to give him up I rejoiced in the fact that he would be so happy and loved in his new home. Many thanks to all the people who inquired on adopting Bernie and those that wrote just to offer support of him. Most of all, thanks to Caroline, Scott and Anna for giving Bernie a new chance at a great life. Humm...Mom, Dad, Daughter, another dog and three cats, that should keep "ol" Bernie busy for a while. You go boy!!! We miss you. John, Gail and the Sarasota Gang |

9/23/01 Why does no one want this great guy??? I've had this site up since July and Bernie hasn't received one e-mail? What's up with that? Bernie is my 16th foster and I have four dogs of my own so I'm a pretty good judge of character. Bernie is flat out cool, not to mention, highly amusing. He loves everything that walks, talks, barks or meows. He's house broken and good looking to boot! Let's see...he knows some obedience commands, pottys on command, gives kisses, respects older animals (and people), lets you groom and even trim his nails without a whimper, makes you laugh out loud, is young and healthy and up to date on everything and is RED to boot! I've put some new pictures up and some text from some recent e-mails I've received. I hope you enjoy and learn a little more about Bernie from them. |

Hi Guys Well I think my "boys" have finally recovered from the Bernie invasion over the past weekend....Webster is definitely missing his new buddy! He really was a very well behaved and polite house guest, he was a real pleasure to baby-sit....crate trained and housebroken...and he doesn't even really pull on a leash either...wow what are people waiting for - I wish my own dogs were so well behaved on a leash! Its hard for me to understand why no one has offered to adopt this great little bundle of energy fun loving red guy - he really is a sweetheart! If I were in the market for a new addition rest assured I'd have snapped him up by now. Bernie is SO comical...he had me in stitches laughing at his antics...I forgot to tell you how he decided to get on the picnic table - in one flying leap up and one back down on the other side...and of course you saw how easily he jumped the low baby gate...if someone was looking for an agility prospect - hey Bernie would fit that bill...after all he's sleek and skinny and can run like the wind...What a great stress reliever Bernie would be after a hard days work...come home and play ball with him for 10 minutes and he'd have you laughing your socks off...especially as he doesn't seem to have control of his legs yet when he chases a ball across the yard...sort of reminiscent of Bambi on ice!! Bernie LOVES other dogs too...when I took him to the dog park he had no problems fitting in with the other dogs....and he came when he was called when we were ready to leave. Well it just goes to show people don't know what they are missing out on with this fun loving little guy...he seems to love everyone and everything...well except when I put the washing basket on my head...he thought I was pretty scary at that point...so make sure to screen out anyone wearing a washing basket ;0) SA |

Oh one more thing..how is Bernie? I am the one who picked
him up from the owners when he was turned in...I will never forget the chain wrapped around a big Tupperware box to keep him secure and then it was attached to his collar. They had him in their garage that looked out into the street so I figure he was probably tortured. He had 3 feet to stand up and lay down and had urinated all around (where else was he supposed to go) and sometimes they would chain him in the backyard. Lovely. So he has some a LONG way. |
| Bernie is about 10 months old and this handsome dude has what it takes to go from rags to riches! He's a real looker who sports a beautiful red coat, active and alert. GRRMF was called to take him in and found him flea-infested and living in a garage attached to a three foot chain. Someone who will take him to obedience training and give him lots of love will have a wonderful companion for life! |

| That was 4 months ago. Bernie is no longer "flea infested" or living "on a chain". Matter of fact, 'ol' Bernie is living LARGE these days! Bernie is our 16th foster and by far the funniest. This guy has a sense of humor and you can't help laughing at him (with him?) even when he is being bad.Bernie is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. That lethal tail (the one which never seems to stop wagging) and the constant kisses could drive you either crazy...or...crazy in love! This guy epitomizes the definition of the legendary Golden temperament. |
| CATS are something to be respected and feared . That is of course unless they run and that means they want to play chase! Bernie acts like he is real "bad" until the cat throws that paw out! OWWW! What a wimp he is.Our cat doesn't even have front claws for goodness sakes. Trust me. Bernie is completely CAT safe! He's not going to eat your cat. On the contrary, I'm afraid we can't allow Bernie to be adopted by a home with aggressive CATS <smile>. |

| Bernie was sent to us because he would soil his crate. After all, he was used to going to the bathroom at the end of that 3 foot chain. No problem. We just treated Bernie as if he were an eight week old puppy instead of one that was a year old. Everything was new and scary to Bernie. After two months of working with him he is now ready for his new home. He is house broke now and we have done a lot of socialization with him. Bernie gets along with all dogs and people. He is so non-aggressive it's scary. As you can see by the picture we have spoiled him like we were a couple of evil Grandparents! Don't worry, Bernie knows he is only allowed on that couch and not the other furniture and he responds to the command "off". |

| Come on guys! How can you say no to that face! Bernie had a really tough first 10 months of life and deserves a loving home. When he came into rescue he was skin and bones and didn't have a clue as to how he was supposed to act. He's come a long way in the past few months. |
| We took Bernie to PetsMart today (8/4/01) for the first time. What a hoot! It was like taking a 65 lb. puppy. Everything was sooo scary! I thought "Big, Bad, Bernie" was going to come out of his skin when he pressed his nose to one of the aquariums and the fish scattered. The automatic door and shopping carts just blew his mind. It's funny that all the things that we and our dogs take for granted that a dog of Bernie's age would find new and exciting. As scary as it was for Bernie, he soon found it to be a really cool place. Lots of good smells, other dogs to visit and every kid in the store just had to pet him! The lady at the check-out counter even gave him a cookie. Bernie was a real sweetheart and I was proud to have him with me. |

1 A fence so he can run his heart out! 5 or 6 feet
would be ideal. Don't forget the tennis balls. 2 Someone to take him to obedience classes. He needs it and so will his new owners. There is no better way to bond with your new dog. 3 A crate. Bernie likes his crate and he is after all only 14 months old. If you don't have one I will be happy to loan a crate to you. 4 Bernie wouldn't mind other animals to play with. This includes teenagers <smile>. I'm afraid Bernie would knock down younger children. Don't forget, Bernie is great with cats even if they are kind of scary! 5 Someone who can love him as unconditionally as he will love them. |
